Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, talks to an Upper West Side resident while patroling the Upper West Side in New York City on August 9, 2020. Residents have complained about an uptick in crime and drugs as well as the housing of sexual offenders in the neighborhood after hotels in the neighborhood have been turned into homeless shelters. Guardian Angels from all over 5 Boroughs schlepped through the snow and met in Washington Heights at the Angelica’s Uptown Cafe on W 187th Street to celebrate the 43rd Anniversary of the beloved and renowned establishment begun by Curtis Sliwa in the Bronx with just 13 kids in 1979.
Several hundred came to show their respects and to celebrate where Officials and Heads of the Districts and Chapters spoke and gave out awards to the outstanding representatives and Guardians of 2021.
“We are no different from one another. Guardian Angels have given people a purpose, a duty of providing safety and security amongst their communities,” was exclaimed.
“Crime has gone up and recruitment is harder,” were other sentiments shared on not only local but Global as well. The Guardian Angels spans now 13 countries across the Globe with Japan holding 21 chapters alone. International presence was provided via ZOOM during the event.
Many people who have been involved in Guardian Angels have moved onto other areas of security jobs and the security sectors.
Sliwa encouraged the importance of keeping streets safe especially in times of uncertainty and the power of community and most of all harmony amongst all.
