Fr Vincent R Capodanno, a Military Chaplin killed in Vietnam 55 years ago today on September 04, 1967, was honored with a Mass and Memorial Service at the chapel that bears his name on the grounds of Ft Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York. The service was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and The Sons of Italy, the Marine Corps League and several other veteran organizations. The Mass was celebrate by Bishop Peter J Byrne, Episcopal Vicar, and Deacon Charles Jude Carroll. The chapel was filled to capacity with standing room only. During the Mass, Fr Capodanno’s cousin Al Lambert sang the Ave Maria. Following the Mass, the Memorial Service was conducted at the statue of Fr Capodanno next to the chapel. The service opened with the presentation of color from both the FDNY and the Marine Corps League. Wreaths were laid at the statue from veterans organizations, the K of C, and the Sons of Italy. The service was concluded with a 21 gun salute by members of the Marine Corps League. Several members of the Capodanno family were in attendance.
