NYPD Emphasizes Progress Ahead of Pride Event

NEW YORK, 06/24/2021: At a press conference Thursday Police Commissioner Dermot Shea reviewed advances in its relationship with LQBTQIA+ officers and the public. Shea spoke along with the leadership of the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL) and high ranking department officials.  Although the annual Pride March, scheduled for Sunday is officially cancelled because of COVID concerns, rumors are that some unofficial events will take place. 

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea speaks to members of the media along with Chief of the Department Rodney Harrison and Sgt. Ana Arboleda. Arboleda, who is vice present of GOAL, will soon step into the role of NYPD LGBTQIA+ Liaison to Harrison replacing the retiring Det. Carl. Locke.
GOAL president Det. Brian Downey bemoaned the decision by the MarchÕs board to ban uniformed officers from participating until at least 2025.
Commissioner Shea and Chief Harrison got together with GOAL members following the conference in which a long list of diversity and inclusion measures was detailed..
