Rikers Island Prison Protest

After a protest against Rikers Island Prison moved onto a Broadway intersection, traffic was stalled upto a half mile long for about an hour. On September 22, 2021 the death of Stephan Khadu, 24, just a few days after Abdul Karim, became the 12th inmate to die at Rikers Island Prison in 2021. After various inquiries and investigations, activist groups such as: Women Prison Coalition, HALT Solitary Confinement, Vocal New York and Jails Action Coalition organized the protest to gather former inmates, family and supporters together, to demand answers from local authorities and political figures regarding the system of prison management, process of bail and incarceration of people who inevitably find themselves in prison without a conviction.
